Zoom Playback Reloaded –
online intensive on Playback in Zoom, as a new direction of aesthetic art

Event by Ukrainian School of Playback Theatre

Since the beginning of the pandemic, all playbackers, or almost all, have started practicing in Playback in Zoom. This difficult period of time is remembered as a moment of technical immersion in the video/audio settings, turning the camera/microphone on/off and generally trying to understand what can and cannot be done within these frames.

These experiments pushed the three of us (Marat, Andrey, Roman) to try to understand what Playback Theater is in Zoom at the meta-level. Very quickly, we realized that this is a new form of art, which has the name “stream-art”. And we also realized the fact that it has its own philosophy, which can and should be applied. What for? In order not just to adapt to Zoom as a technology, but to start developing and deepening our skills.

We had various thoughts, ideas, practical skills and, most importantly, projects (many of which were created by the three of us, and also with others, like-minded people), which stimulated us to develop into stream-art. Since there was a lot of new knowledge, we also started structuring it.

Looking around at other PBT projects, we realized that we have something to offer the global Playback Community. We created this course, which we called “Zoom Playback – Reloaded”. We invite you to participate in the first two workshops, which will not only introduce you to our vision, but also give you new skills to work in stream art. So, let's go…

Intensive I
Intro and Visual Storytelling

2 – 3 July
8:30 pm to 11:30 pm (GMT +2)

Introduction: Let's get to know each other and also learn the basic concept of stream art. We will explain and show such terms as Gate, Spacetime, and Site-Specific. We will also teach you rituals that help you live in the virtual space.

Visual storytelling: Stream-art works with screen and camera. It is like a new language, full of words, expressions, and metaphors. A language that can convey the feelings of the narrator and create an overall atmosphere in the performance. This language is very familiar to filmmakers. After all, it is in the cinema that there are such visual concepts as the Camera Angle, Three Shots (Close-Up, Middle, Long), and the principle of Quarters. We will understand the logic of these concepts and learn how to use them, using them to create beauty and depth in the Playback Theater.

Intensive II
Light and new Zoom forms

16 – 17 July
8:30 pm to 11:30 pm (GMT +2)

Light: We will continue to discuss and practice visuals, this time delving into the concept of light. What skills do we need to learn? For example, how to work with natural light, or how to expose it. We will understand what the color scheme means and how it corresponds to our feelings through the Hindu concept of Rasa.

Zoom Forms: Are you familiar with the “Two Narrators” form? What about “Mirrors”? What about the forms “There” or “The Hero's Journey – The Beginning”? We have developed many forms, and they differ from each other conceptually and visually. That is, they are applicable to different types of personal stories. In the second part of our intensive, we will share some of these forms with you. We will teach you how to play them and together we will figure out what type of personal stories they are suitable for.

About Us
We (Andrey, Marat, and Roman) are travelers of the virtual universe. The roads we've traveled count in gigabytes of paths, hours of exploration, and performances on Zoom. But we did not go by ourselves, we led hundreds of people through the darkness of the pandemic and the horrors of war. And no matter how dark it was around, our path was always illuminated by the flame of Playback. And here we are, proudly lifting it up, we set off on the next journey. Will you come with us?

– Andrey Utenkov (Ukraine) is an alchemist of physicality and visuality, who turns 3D into 2D and vice versa with his art.

– Roma Kandibur (Ukraine) is a stream art shaman who can touch your heart through the Zoom frames, bringing them to life.

– Marat Mairovich (Israel) is an oracle of sound design who, with his skill, turns stories into music, he is able to surf the audio waves right from his home.

So, we've told you everything, and now a question to you, Neo: Which pill will you choose, red or blue?
